Handsome Hippo arrived with us very withdrawn with bad skin and he was covered in ticks, he arrived without a name or microchip. Hippo is a very sweet boy, a cheerful and kind dog, who walks very nicely on the leash, and our older volunteers are walking him, as he is one of the few dogs who does not pull on the leash. He doesn't enjoy the walks around the shelter so much sadly, but once you take him further away from the stressy shelter, then he really enjoys going for walks in the town, parks or in the forest, he loves to quietly explore and to smell the flowers. Hippo is a good boy also on town streets and behaves very well everywhere. When visiting the town, he is not bothered about the city traffic, people running around or other dogs, he just calmly takes a sit with you in a cafeteria or keeps walking on his route. Car drives are a bit stressy for him still, but he will get used to them quickly, he already has some experience driving in the car! Hippo is not a demanding dog - he is happy with calm walks and lots of time together on the sofa or a cosy carpet. Hippo has been sensitive to touch around the torso/stomach area, and once we took him to a traumatologist, we found out that he has a bit of discendopolosis, which probably has been hurting him in the torso area. Hippo also has had Alopecia (hair loss) but over time good food, skin & hair supplements and sardines (his favourite on the planet) have really worked well, and he has grown fluffy baby hippo hair all over his body where there used to be no hair! PS. Even though his name might suggest a love for water, he actually doesn't like the pools, so no pool needed for Hippo! Hippo is the favourite of several of our volunteers for his calm nature and soft companionship. After years in the shelter, Hippo would now really like to go home.... He is looking for a quiet, calm home preferably without children, not because he is not good with children, but because he does have some back pain, and children might hurt him with their energy. In the shelter Hippo lives in a single kennel, but out on walks and town visits, he is very calm around other dogs. He would prefer a home as a single dog, but we do not think he would make any drama about the neighborhood dogs! His shoulder height is approximately 54cm.
